Simple joys

How are your New Year’s resolutions coming along?
That good, huh? 😅 You’re definitely not alone.

It seems resolutions—like rules—are made to be broken. Not many years ago, I was right there with everyone else, spending December promising myself I would completely change my life and be perfect… starting January 2nd. And without fail, I failed. By January 5th.

Over time, as I learned more about effective goal setting (and worked through some health challenges), something shifted. I stopped aiming for perfection and started setting realistic goals—ones I could work toward all year long. I also learned to give myself grace when progress wasn’t linear.

One of those goals? Being more mindful about what I put on my skin.

Why Skin Care Matters

Our skin is our largest organ. While it’s an excellent protective barrier, some products can damage it—or be absorbed into the body altogether. That means what we put on our skin can have a real impact on our overall health.

If you’re also trying to be more intentional about your skincare and personal care products, I’d love to share three tools that have been incredibly helpful on my journey.

1. Yuka

Yuka is an app that lets you scan beauty and personal care products and rates them based on their “cleanness.” If a product receives a poor score, the app suggests cleaner alternatives—which I love.

Yuka also evaluates food products and clearly explains the criteria behind each score. Another big plus? They don’t have an affiliate program. While I do participate in affiliate programs myself, I really respect Yuka’s commitment to remaining completely objective in their product reviews.

2. Think Dirty®

Think Dirty® is another great app for anyone transitioning to cleaner products. When you sign up, it asks a few personalization questions so it can tailor recommendations to you.

One feature I especially appreciate: if you scan a product that isn’t in their database, you can submit it for review. It takes some time for their team to evaluate new entries, but this is incredibly helpful—especially if you use products that aren’t widely available.

3. Environmental Working Group (EWG)

The Environmental Working Group works tirelessly to improve the quality of our environment and our health. Their website is packed with information on everything from beauty products to water quality.

They also offer an app called Healthy Living, which—like Yuka and Think Dirty®—allows you to scan products for health information. This includes details about potential cancer risks and endocrine disruptors. Healthy Living covers food, skincare, and even cleaning products, making it a powerful all-in-one resource.

If you’re ready to simplify your beauty routine and start swapping in healthier products, I hope one (or all!) of these tools helps support you along the way.

Together, let’s live simply—one choice at a time.
